Rapid Fire

By Stanley

-The Masters is shaping out to be a great tournament. Tiger and Phil are both in contention, both on the back nine on the final day. Kenny Perry currently leads, as I post this, but Tiger is roaring back. The sad reality is that no one will remember this tournament unless either Tiger Woods or Phil Mickleson wins (I'm not sure if this is good or bad). If either Tiger or Phil wins this Masters, it will be one of the better majors of the past few years.

-This NFL Draft class appears to be one of the worst of the past few years. No position is very strong, although there are several good offensive tackles and linebackers. In fact, the quarterbacks and halfbacks are particularly weak. Although he may not be deserving at all, Matt Stafford could be the number one pick based solely off his position. This sort of quarterback trap happened to the 49ers in the 2005 Draft with Alex Smith. If Matthew Stafford does not pan out as a good NFL quarterback, the Lions franchise will be set back even further. This is why drafting a player like linebacker Aaron Curry or tackle Jason Smith might make more sense. It is better for the Lions salary wise and it is also a safer pick.

-The NHL Playoffs are leaps and bounds more exciting than the NBA playoffs. If you are not a hockey fan, you should become one now, because the league is more exciting than ever. Not only are superstars like Alex Ovechkin, Sydney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin present in today's game, but there are also a plethora of really great teams like the Sharks and Red Wings. Every round of the NHL Playoffs is intense, whereas the NBA Playoffs have a lackluster first round full of crappy series in which the higher seed almost always dominates. The talent level is so close in the NHL, so every series is pretty competitive. Also, there is nothing like Game 7 Hockey.

-Back to the Masters. If you aren't watching this tournament, you should be. Not only is it shaping out to be a great finish, but Tiger and Phil are playing in the same pairing.

-The NFL Schedule releases on Tuesday evening. Trust me, Mel Kiper's Hair will be all over this one. The NFL has to be the only league that can actually make the schedule release a major event.

-College football teams all across the nation are having their spring games. Michigan's much anticipated spring game showcased several new players, including freshman quarterback Tate Forcier. Forcier impressed the 50,000 fans on hand, playing a very fluid game. Incoming freshman Denard Robinson was also on hand. Robinson has reportedly been learning the playbook, although he did not enroll in college early like Forcier. Robinson reportedly ran a 10.28 second 100 meter dash. This speed should be very effective for Michigan at quarterback in 2009. Look for Robinson and Forcier to compete for the job in the fall. They will probably both see game action this upcoming season.
