If you have watched baseball at any point during the last 100 years, you know one thing: DO NOT pick the Cubs to win the World Series. Of course, Mike picks the Cubs to win it all. Until it happens, you just can't predict that the curse will be broken. It is unrealistic and naive. Its not like the Cubs have a bad team. History doesn't lie, and the history is pretty clear here. They choke in the playoffs. Picking the Cubs to win it all is a mistake. Here are my picks:
Onto the picks. Usually I make these in like mid-August, early-September. But I'm rolling them out a bit early this year. Without further delay:
AL East:
1. New York Yankees
2. Boston Red Sox (WC)
3. Tampa Bay Rays
4. Toronto Blue Jays
5. Baltimore Orioles
AL Central:
1. Detroit Tigers
2. Minnesota Twins
3. Chicago White Sox
4. Cleveland Indians
5. Kansas City Royals
AL West:
1. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
2. Texas Rangers
3. Oakland A's
4. Seattle Mariners
NL East:
1. New York Mets
2. Florida Marlins (WC)
3. Philadelphia Phillies
4. Atlanta Braves
5. Washington Nationals
NL Central
1. Chicago Cubs
2. St. Louis Cardinals
3. Milwaukee Brewers
4. Pittsburgh Pirates
5. Houston Astros
6. Cincinnati Reds
NL West
1. LA Dodgers
2. San Francisco Giants
3. Arizona Diamondbacks
4. San Diego Padres
5. Colorado Rockies
Notes about the picks: I think that four out of the five teams in the AL East will finish over .500, with the O's being just below. The Tigers are a risky pick, but I think that their offense should be able to carry their slightly improved but still atrocious bullpen. The NL Central race will be extremely close, but the Marlins will edge out the Cardinals and the Brewers for the Wild Card. The Dodgers will pull away from the Giants and D'Backs in early September.
Onto the Playoffs:
Divisional Round:
Red Sox defeat Angels
Yankees defeat Tigers
Marlins defeat Cubs
Dodgers defeat Mets
League Championships:
Yankees defeat Red Sox
Dodgers defeat Marlins
World Series:
Yankees defeat Dodgers
